East German Contractor wins bid to build Baghdad "Freedom Wall"

(BAGHDAD, Ucs News International) – American military commanders in Baghdad have hired the German firm Arbeit Macht Der-Frei Gmbh to construct the 3 mile long concreete wall dividing Baghdad. US officials are trying an old strategy to quell the widening sectarian violence. The 12-foot-high, three-mile-long “Freedom wall” will separate historic a Sunni enclave from Shiite neighborhoods.

US officials in the Adhamiya district of northern Baghdad, a Sunni Arab stronghold, began construction of the “Freedom wall” last week and expect to finish it within a month. The spokesmen for Arbeit Macht Der-Frei Gmbh stated “The work is going well, as the firm has much experience in these matters.” While the value of the contract has not been released, it’s believed to be around 4 billion dollars.

Arbeit Macht Der-Frei Gmbh is a well know and respected in Germany. The firm managed the construction of the Berlin wall and many hundreds of miles separating eastern and western Germany. The firm is controversial choice for the “Freedom wall” as is the firm also built many of Nazi “Holiday” camps in Germany and Poland.

Once the wall is complete US Army soldiers would then control movement through a few, easy to bomb, checkpoints. The wall has already drawn intense criticism from residents of the neighborhood, who say that it will increase sectarian tensions and will transform the residents into caged animals.

US officials responsible for the project defend the “Freedom wall”. The American military said in a written statement that “the wall is one of the centerpieces of a new strategy by coalition and Iraqi forces to break the cycle of sectarian violence.

According to the army the insurgents attacks will be dramatically reduced. “The 15 minute delay required to drive around the 3 mile will stop those lazy terrorists for sure.”
