Had a long discussion last week with my friend Bob.
Bob claimed that today’s youth are perhaps the worst informed ever regarding history, government. science and just about everything except Iboxes and video games.
In turn, I said that today’s kids are more well informed than those of previous generations. Anyway to settle it, we decided to go to the local mall and randomly query some college or high school-aged kids to see what they know, so off we went.
We found two girls. Let’s call them Jane and Linda, who agreed to be quizzed.
I asked Jane, ” Which one person, not in your family, or not a friend, do you feel you know most about?”
Jane thought a while. “I think Britney Jean Spears. She was born December 2, 1981, in the small town of Kentwood, LA, and began performing as a singer and dancer at a young age. With a nationally televised appearance on Star Search already under her belt, Spears auditioned for the Disney Channel’s The New Mickey Mouse Club at age eight. The producers turned her down as too young, but one of them took an interest and introduced her to an agent in New York….. Do you want more?.”
“No, Jane, but let me ask you question two. Who is the Vice President of the United States?
Jane thought for a while, ” Bill Gates?”
We put the same first question to Linda.
After a moment she said she knew about Madonna.
“Madonna moved from her native Michigan to New York in 1977, with dreams of becoming a ballet dancer. She studied with choreographer Alvin Ailey and modeled. In 1979, she became part of the Patrick Hernandez Revue, a disco outfit who had the hit “Born to Be Alive.” She traveled to Paris with Hernandez; it was there that she met Dan Gilroy, who would soon become her boyfriend……”
We stopped her there, and asked her, as we did Jane, “Who is the Vice President of the United States?”
Linda smiled,, ” everyone knows that! It’s Fred Thompson!”
Bob and I, a bit depressed, stopped off for a few beers.
