Unconfirmed sources report that Lewis “Scooter” Libby, former chief of staff for the Vice President has announced that he will be running for the Presidency in 2008. Libbey, who is currently on trial for perjury, made the announcement during a break in court proceedings today. The announcement touched off a wave of positive publicity for the beleaguered Libbey who faces many years in prison for his role in the Iraq WMD cover up.
Libbey joins an already crowed field of presidential hopefuls but many believe he has a real chance of stealing the nomination from the perceived front runners McCain and Giuliani,.
“Scooter is connected and has great name recognition, that is what could put him over the top.” Says Tim Russert NBC News reporter and host of “Meet the Press.” “He is a tough political street fighter who knows how to work the levers of power. Don’t let the name fool you, Libby ain’t no Scooter, he is a steam roller. Believe me, I know Libbey.”
The Republican Party establishment has remained silent publicly on the Presidential bid, but privately has expressed real excitement for Libbey’s candidacy. Underneath the party’s support for McCain and Giuliani, I runs a strong undercurrent that neither front runner has what it takes. It seems a paper thing layer of support is hiding serious misgivings about the pair.
McCain has hitched his wagon to the President’s failed war polices and shows every indication of following Bush over a cliff. Giuliani,, a known womanizer, and gay supporter, can’t speak the traditional voter that has made up the core of the party’s faithful. In that context, Libby, a proven Republican operative with tons of cash and connections looks like a good bet.
