BOISE, Idaho (Ucs News) — Sen. Larry Craig has been chosen for induction into the Idaho Hall of shame, because of his well-publicized arrest and guilty plea in an airport gay bathroom sex sting, officials said.
The nonprofit Idaho Hall of shame Association picked Craig in March, after he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct when a Minneapolis airport police officer accused him of soliciting gay sex in the men’s restroom, the organization’s board chairman said.
“Larry Craig has made a great contribution to shame of Idaho over the period of 20-some years. Our gay Senator has made us all truly ashamed to be from Idaho” Harry Magnuson told The Spokesman-Review newspaper Saturday. Magnuson also stated the Hall of Shame staffers have entered into negotiations with the Minneapolis airport authority to purchase the bathroom stall and toilet for the Hall of Shame exhibit.
Many Republicans said the honor is totally appropriate now. Kootenai County Republican precinct committeeman Phil Thompson said Idaho Hall of shame officials should consider speeding up the induction. “Maybe in 10 or 15 days we can organize the commemoration and schedule the ceremony.” He said. “It’s a sad day to be a Republican so we need to celebrate Larry Craig’s moral failing.”
Craig vowed Thursday to serve out the last 15 months of his term, despite the Hall of shame induction and the court ruling that left intact his guilty plea in the sex sting operation.
Several people are scheduled to be inducted during the October 13 ceremony alongside the Convicted sex offender Sen. Larry Craig. About 100 people have been inducted into the Idaho Hall of Shame since 1995. According to Harry Magnuson “Sen. Larry Craig will be our all star, he has truly made all of Idaho embarrassed.”
