It’s election time again and I have to say I’ve been thinking a lot about my kids. What got me thinking about them was when the President implied democrats love terrorists. I thought “Well! I’m a democrat and I don’t love terrorists, so what do I love?” I love my kids. I’m a democrat who loves his kids.
It is a ritual for me to take my children, ages 2 and 4, with me to vote. We vote at the school just around the corner, the one they are still too small to attend. We wait in line for a bit and then I fill out the papers to get my optical scan ballot. As I write my children play with the pens and charm the old ladies who work the polling place.
I take my ballot and herd my brood to the flimsy privacy shield and I make my selections. Now, I’ve been thinking a lot about how I’m going to vote today and it will come as no surprise to you, dear reader, that I am voting on the Democratic side of the ledger.
All bad humor and rock throwing aside, I would like to tell you al little bit about why I am voting democratic.
I vote for my kids, really I do. I don’t really believe the vote I will take toady will greatly affect my life, but I do believe the little nudge I will give this country today might make America a better place for my children. Well, if not a better life for my kids a life that is at least as good as the one I have been privileged to live in this country.
So what is it I believe?
I believe we should stop spending so much money. We are spending our children’s money like drunken sailors. I am furious that the current administration has taken the best part of being a Republican and thrown it out the window. I believe in financial responsibility.
I believe that I need to pay for what I get. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t like to pay taxes, but I know that running a good government with a good strong military takes money, lots of it. So, I’ll pay my taxes, but I expect to get some value for it.
I don’t want a big government, but I expect the one I have too work when I need it. I expect that the people who are running important agencies, like say FEMA, to actually know what they are doing. We don’t need the President’s unqualified friends doing the important work of our government.
My God is my business, your God is your business. I don’t believe that any political party has the favor of God over any other. Not to mention I’m not crazy about the way politics can mettle with religious institutions.
I believe America needs leaders born of experience, achievement and courage, not name recognition, family privilege, and empty ambition.
I believe in freedom. The freedom to speak what I want to, the freedom to sleep with whom I want to, the freedom to marry whom I want to, and I expect my government to treat me no differently no matter how I choose to use my freedoms.
I believe that every American should have the chance to succeed in our society. The last several years has seen the closing of opportunity for many working Americans. The working people of this country are not enjoying the fruits of this great nations prosperity.
I believe that American people own this country and not multi-national corporations.
I believe the President works for me and all Americans, not just his best friends and donors.
Ok. Ok. Ok. I ramble, but the truth is I look around and what is happening in this great country, the greatest that has ever existed, and I want better for it. I want a better America for all Americans and especially my two children. I believe the guys in charge right now are not doing such a good job and I want to kick’em out.
That’s why I’m voting for some democrats today.
